๐ŸกDEVON COTTAGE 53๐Ÿก End April 2020 ๐Ÿก

Blog 53 ๐Ÿก Week 6 of #CoronaVirus Lockdown๐Ÿก Well here we all are still staying at home, hard work but has to be done !! When reading this in a few months time when we hopefully have our lives back, it will be very strange to remind ourselves about how we coped ! ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿค”

Found this lovely large metal stable feeding bracket/ hanger at the Auction a while ago, loved it for under the window at front of house & for ยฃ 6.20 including fees at Auction it was a fantastic bargain๐Ÿ‘ Managed to get a liner which was exact fit for ยฃ12 online, so with the food shopping on our ‘one trip out’ to the Farm Shop, I put some bedding plants in my trolley, thought that was ok to do that as food shopping too ?๐Ÿก

Last Blog I mentioned that I would hopefully have my seeds planted but unfortunately my order still waits ‘fulfilled’ status & that will total a month waiting !๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒฐ Completely understand as they’ve been snowed under with orders, I’ll be on the packing list one day soon.๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒน๐Ÿก

Peas are growing ๐Ÿ‘

So this last weekend was glorious & that dreaded corner of the garden was to be properly attacked & cleared ! What a job…most done by Andy, very hard work but what a difference it has made, lovely & bright. Cannot decide at the moment what we will eventually use the area for, but we do need to sort the compost heap out next so decided will use a compost bin instead of throwing it in a big heap, so an ideal area for that.

Old chicken house/shed falling apart !
Well rotten !
Getting there….
Opened up area
the back of garden from roadside
Left with all this to get rid of…maybe a skip is needed ? ๐Ÿคฃ Think it’s a No….very expensive to hire !

Have been sorting out items to go on our EBAY Shop, as I mentioned before we stopped our shop area at Colyton to concentrate online with Ebay & selling ok at the moment, sort of glad we pulled out in January as customers unable to visit of course at the moment ๐Ÿ˜ฎ! Luckily we have lots of stock still to go on Ebay as no Auctions at the moment.

My ‘one walk’ earlier today, road empty ๐ŸŒป

Until next Blog…take care of yourselves

๐ŸกDEVON COTTAGE 19๐ŸกLast week of April 2017

Blog 19 ๐Ÿก Started stripping the porch ready for new thatch….

How can the porch have so much thatch on it, amazing !

Some of the wood needs replacing on roof, must also paint woodwork on door & frame, taking away the black colour.

Painting done, black colour nearly all gone.

These two pheasants will have pride of place on top of roof BUT a big discussion is where do they go….together or apart ?!

Decision decided, one on each ridge, so cute !

Look at that porch now, love it ! Notice the painted chimney and what’s that on the roof !

The cows in the field wondering what’s going on or maybe they’re not bothered!

Big job next are the outside walls to be painted a nice cream colour, what a job that will be !!  Made a start, primer first….

This side of house is high so making use of scaffold for an extra week so must get as much painted as possible this weekend !  *So managed to get top half of wall painted with primer & one coat of parchment colour, the weather wasn’t the best for one of the days !*  So must give it final coat next weekend, hopefully finish bottom half of wall too !

‘Wobbly floor’ bedroom will be sorted soon by local carpenter…..

Well it’s 1st May soon, here’s to all the May jobs on next Blog ! ๐Ÿก Enjoy….x

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 24๐Ÿก September 2017

Blog 24๐Ÿก What a wet August that was ! Eventually we were able to finish painting outside house wall and also painted front wall, looking so much better, fresh & clean.

Previously was a white/grey colour I suppose to go with original black window frames so now having oak frames we liked the cream colour (parchment) for the walls. Just leaves two more walls to finish, hopefully before Winter !!

The garden patio area looking good, sleepers in to support the upper area, then shingled and more shingle on lower area, should be enough shingle !! That was fun (!) moving all that in buckets !

We have lots of pots we are filling for patio area so buying a plant each time we’re out ! ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒฑ

Chickens are much bigger now, hopefully first eggs soon ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ”?

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 25 ๐ŸกOctober 2017

Blog 25 ๐Ÿก Well the weather hasn’t improved for the Month of October…oh well suppose Winter is coming ! The only excitement having weather like this is visiting Lyme Regis when storms are approaching, quite spectacular !  The dogs love it and we all come back with sandy feet !

Looking at the ‘wobbly floor’ bedroom, (must change that name as the floor is fine now!) have taken down the bin liners which were stuck over the holes catching the rain from the thin thatch, now sealed up so no draughts, also fixed this in landing ceiling, that had same problem but all sealed and no leaks !  We can paint over the plasterboard when we decorate. Looks very neat work by Andy ! I stood and helped if he needed it !  So this room looking much better, needing decorating, carpet, wardrobe….now thats going to be fun chosing a wardrobe as walls are not straight and beams in the way ! So think only one part of the bedroom suitable to get decent size wardrobe in, so on the look out at the Antiques shops.

The doorway to this bedroom is very low, ok for me being bit shorter but you have to duck to avoid hitting your head if taller, so the plan is to cut out above the door frame and put in a bigger door.  Andy cut away the plaster and discovered a very dry messy mixture of dirt, a dry cob mix used to build this wall.

It covered everything, it was so dusty, looking around for a new size door, thought of a downstairs door between kitchen and boiler cupboard which is never used and yes it fits width ways and door frame cut to size height ways, may need a new door frame to hang door onto as original frame, part of beam used before makes the door hang funny angle and will not be moving the beam !

Thinking of sending the chickens back….they still have not laid any eggs !! Only joking but what is going on….they are about 25 weeks old now and things should have happened ! Fingers crossed for VERY soon !  We wonder if they were younger than the 12 weeks when we first saw them at the Farm.  More wood added to their run today to eventually add a waterproof cover over the top to protect them in the winter, should be better for them.  They were trying to shade from ‘Storm Brian’ so putting a cover on will keep them dry.

Enjoying breakfast ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“

Hoping next blog will include eggs !!                        ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”

UPDATE….๐ŸณFirst egg laid on 5 Nov 2017 …..at last !! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ“๐Ÿณ

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 28๐ŸกJanuary 2018

Blog 28 ๐ŸกA New Year starts….๐Ÿก Seaton Beach looking good๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ• Chickens are still laying, all the books say they take a break during Winter, but reckon as they were late starters –November– then maybe that’s the reason they haven’t stopped ? Grateful to the chickens still for all these eggs๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ“Look at this tiny, tiny egg ๐Ÿ†’๐Ÿ” What do you reckon on the weird egg ? Didn’t use it ! ๐Ÿ“Porridge for breakfast๐Ÿ” ๐ŸŠ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘Can I say hello ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ Lovely Lyme Regis on a calm day..๐Ÿ– โ˜”BUT the difference on a very WET day !!๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿถโ˜” oh dear ! ๐Ÿก๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ–๐Ÿก๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 29๐Ÿก February 2018

Blog 29๐Ÿก… Bird Flu has hit a few areas of the UK so the whole country has to take precautions. So bought a disinfectant sachet to wash boots each time entering chicken run…. let’s see how long it lasts ๐Ÿ”

See this huge egg….look what was inside, first double yolk ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿณ

Decided to plan a vegetable plot & compost heap, think the plot is big enough ! Lots of homemade compost, great start.

๐ŸŽƒAlready have saved pumpkin seeds so we’ll see if they grow nice & big for Halloween !๐ŸŽƒ A future blog, hopefully if they grow. So the Vegetable Diary & books have come out, started to keep a record about our last plot a while ago, of vegetables & fruit that grew well & the disasters too ! Choosing things to grow that you enjoy eating they say is best & not too many ‘fancy things’ so will decide soon & get planting…๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒถ๐ŸŒฑ but when the weather improves !

This was before their dog walk at Lyme Regis Beach, not too happy with those towels !! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 31๐Ÿก April 2018

Blog 31 ๐Ÿก Decorating time ! Once we start it’s ok but it’s the starting that’s hard ! But we did start on the bedroom, deciding to match in the colours from the curtains including a feature wall colour. After clearing the room, made a start using Dove Grey, Taupe and Classic Red…..but would the Red look right and we were happy with it, but it took 3 coats to look right ! Finished off with Camel colour carpet & oak colour furniture matching the walls. Good job !

Next bedroom using Dove Grey, Victorian Lace & Princess again using colours in curtains. Also happy with this feature wall colour Princess. Having white furniture in this room, make a decision on having same colour carpet in all the bedrooms or different colours ?

Very different bedside tables, cute ! ๐Ÿ“š

Moving on to next bedroom, lots of paint left, maybe use in other rooms ?

๐Ÿ”New plastic roof going on for the chicks to hopefully help keep them dry. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“

Cleared out Summer House, what a mess made by mice deciding to pull apart the sun lounger & use the foam for nesting !! Also eaten the grass seed & box, the bird food & box, they were lovin’ life in there !

And now a big TREAT of fish & chips at the seaside ! #lymeRegis #TheCobb ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ–

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 33๐Ÿก June 2018

Blog 33๐Ÿก Starting this blog with a picture of a visitor we had recently in the garden !! Also a small shrew arrived in the house, played at hiding very well but managed to get it to run into a box & put outside !

Views across to Axminster on our doggie walk ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ

What’s going on here ? ! Still brooding I reckon ! Only 2 eggs being laid at the moment so have a reasonable amount of eggs to cope with ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“

๐Ÿ“First strawberries & add some clotted cream, delicious ! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“

Early morning in Lyme Regis, very quiet, started running this week, so a good idea to give it a try along the beach front with Katherine ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒ

Went to visit Beer Quarry Caves, now me & caves do not get on but would wait & see when I get there to see if I go in, on their website description it says ‘no crawling involved’!!

Entrance to the caves….oh dear !

Great, a gate to escape back through if need to….!

Well, pleased to say it was very spacious inside so made it out again after the hour Tour which was informative! Still would not want to get lost in there, so when you buy your entrance tickets they also give you little red plastic squares so on entering the caves you hand your tickets in & on exit you hand in red squares & they make sure that same number been handed over, so no chance of hiding in there for the night ! Interesting but simple idea, think it’s all to do with people sometimes wandering off !! (Health & Safety).

My treat for being brave was a ‘Cream Tea’ after ! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฐ Nice to chill out for the day๐Ÿน

๐Ÿก๐Ÿก๐Ÿก๐Ÿก๐Ÿก๐Ÿก

๐ŸกDevon Cottage 35๐ŸกJuly 2018

Blog 35 ๐ŸกThe month of July started with a trip to Falmouth Cornwall, lovely weather, pretty place.

Our new chicken, Doris has started laying, tiny eggs๐Ÿ”

Lacking eggs at the moment, one time we had too many to eat but the broody hens, Pam & Dawn, who have finished brooding now, are slowly laying again, but we do collect 4 eggs so getting there ! ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”

A project started outside with all this wonderful weather is painting the wind-up Gramophone in ‘Clotted Cream’ colour, (like that name) we bought it recently ! I hear you say why ? It’s a project to strip everything out and put in a vinyl turntable & speakers, we’ll advertise items as spares. Have bought the turntable plus need speakers & cd player to finish it. It will all fit in the unit plus all our vinyls (including my Osmond vinyls, & on that subject did you ever read my Osmond Blogs if you fancy click here ! http://tinamckenzie.blog ๐Ÿ†’๐Ÿ‘ Back to this blog ! So original wooden gramophone looked like this…..

Nice varnished lid keeping the original wood colour to finish it off. ๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŽถ

Ready to go ! ๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŽ›๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽผ

Blog 36 ๐ŸŒป This was a surprise Sunflower, it just started growing next to our Bay tree, nice one !๐ŸŒป

๐ŸŒทBucket found buried in garden when clearing it, so why not plant something in it !๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒผ

What a very HOT August that was ! When I look back last year at September’s Blog I started it with the line โ˜”What a wet August that wasโ˜” You just never know what our Summer months will be like here in the UK ! So we had severe โ„snow fallsโ›„ beginning of the year & a ๐ŸŒžheatwave Summer๐ŸŒž what’s next ?!!

๐Ÿ“Time has come to put a Coolbox outside & make a sign to sell the eggs, we are back to the situation of too many eggs to cope with, even giving them away ! It’s a good problem to have but they must be eaten !๐Ÿ” Omelette tonight & maybe next night too !! Update:- Now we’ve a problem again with same two brooding again, Pam & Dawn, getting them out so many times during the day, after reading about broody hens we’re going with the plan to keep coop main door closed during day after others have laid ! ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”

Pumpkins are growing & more on the way ๐ŸŽƒ looove pumpkin soup.

๐Ÿ…Fruit & vegetables finishing, some tomatoes still going ๐Ÿ…
